Background of the Study

Safe blood transfusion practices are critical for preventing transfusion-related complications, such as infections, transfusion reactions, and improper matching of blood products. Blood transfusion is a life-saving procedure used in a variety of medical conditions, including trauma, surgery, anemia, and cancer treatment (Adeniyi et al., 2023). Ensuring that blood transfusion practices are carried out safely is essential to patient safety, and adherence to established protocols is crucial in preventing adverse outcomes.

Nurses play a central role in blood transfusion procedures, from verifying patient details and blood product compatibility to monitoring the patient during and after the transfusion. Proper training in blood transfusion practices is vital for nurses to ensure adherence to safety protocols and minimize risks (Olayiwola et al., 2024). At Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, nurses are involved in various aspects of blood transfusion, but the level of adherence to safe transfusion practices may vary. Factors such as training, staffing levels, and institutional support can influence nurses' ability to follow transfusion safety protocols consistently.

This study aims to evaluate nurses' adherence to safe blood transfusion practices at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, identify factors that influence their adherence, and recommend strategies to improve blood transfusion safety in the hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Inadequate adherence to blood transfusion safety protocols can lead to serious complications, including transfusion reactions and infections, which can be life-threatening for patients. Despite established guidelines for blood transfusions, the adherence to these practices by nurses may be compromised by various factors, such as a lack of training, time constraints, or insufficient resources. This study seeks to assess the level of adherence to safe blood transfusion practices among nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, and identify the challenges that contribute to non-adherence.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of adherence to safe blood transfusion practices by nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

  2. To identify factors that influence nurses' adherence to blood transfusion safety protocols.

  3. To evaluate the relationship between adherence to safe transfusion practices and patient outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adherence to safe blood transfusion practices by nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa?

  2. What factors influence nurses' adherence to blood transfusion safety protocols?

  3. How does adherence to safe blood transfusion practices affect patient outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses who receive regular training in blood transfusion safety are more likely to adhere to safe transfusion practices.

  2. There is a significant relationship between the availability of resources and nurses' adherence to safe blood transfusion practices.

  3. Higher adherence to blood transfusion safety protocols is associated with fewer transfusion-related complications.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses involved in blood transfusion procedures at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. It will assess their adherence to established protocols and identify influencing factors. Limitations include the focus on one hospital and the inability to assess patient perceptions directly.

Definitions of Terms

  • Blood Transfusion: The process of transferring blood or blood products into a patient's circulation intravenously.

  • Adherence to Safety Protocols: The extent to which nurses follow established guidelines to ensure safe blood transfusion practices.

  • Transfusion Reactions: Adverse effects that can occur during or after a blood transfusion, ranging from mild symptoms to life-threatening conditions.
